Welcome to the VGMMDI Kickstarter Rundown, a weekly recap report for current and past video game kickstarter projects. Each week we’ll identify our top picks for promising projects by calling out features and characteristics that helped distinguish these games from the crowd. Check back every Tuesday for new picks and updated progress reports for ongoing projects!

This week’s pick is a sleeper that I totally missed in previous weeks. It is ending soon though, tomorrow, so if you want to get a piece of the backer reward, now is your last chance!

Rainy Season –Risk of Rain $25,200 ($7,000) 24 Hours Remaining

Risk of Rain is an action platformer rougelike that looks to be specializing in complete chaos. Really, go check out their video to see this in action. The project has already far surpassed it’s goal, and all of it’s stretch goals, but any future funds will go into keeping development going post release to add more and more content. Also, there is a demo available if you need further convincing.

Previous Picks:

Voxel This –Stonehearth (Up $201,300) $238,900 ($120,000) 22 Days Remaining

Stonehearth has blasted through funding last week to reaching nearly double it’s goal with plenty of time to go. Stretch goals have been outlined every $20k, with major milestones every $100k. Goals include new enemies, classes, races, and co-op features.

Super Motendo –A.N.N.E. (Up $17,100) $61,200 ($70,000) 14 Days Remaining

A.N.N.E. is nearly reached the funding goal, and with 2 weeks left, they should have no problem getting their final bit. The game developer will be on this Friday 5/10 doing a Q&A on twitch.tv

Metroidiablo. –Chasm (Up $43,800) $164,500 ($150,000) 4 Days Remaining

Chasm has cleared their original funding goal, and now it’s on to the stretch goals for it’s final few days. Highlights include adding an achievement system and an arena mode, both seem likely to be reached.

4 X’s and 1 F. –Worlds of Magic (Up £7,300) £45,593 (£30,000) Funding Successful

Worlds of Magic has reached it’s funding goal and reached the 45K stretch goal that included mac and linux versions along with the addition of a community chosen faction to be available at release.

The Controller Destroyer –Flowstorm (Up $166) $4,766 ($50,000) Funding Unsuccessful

Massively Multiplayer Online Kickstarter–Camelot Unchained (Up $482,500) $2,232,933 ($2,000,000) Funding Successful

Congratulations for the crew over at City State Entertainment! The founder’s points addons packs really helped increase the pledging in the final week. Now to settle in for the long wait, expected release isn’t until at least December 2015!

As always, thanks for reading!

Yes, you heard correct. It would seem YouTube user Zwenkka does not like to get off the couch to change his games. The changer is controlled by Bluetooth which you can see around the 1:20 mark by an app that the user has on his phone. It can switch between thirty two different games with an average change time of forty two seconds. The video below goes into better detail on this amazing creation for which I’m sure the person in a virgin. I’m just kidding Zwenkka.

If you haven’t heard yet, Gearbox and Sega have just received a class action law suit on false advertising for Aliens: Colonial Marines. This suit was filed by Edelson LLC on behalf of plaintiff Damion Perrine claiming that the demo of the game shown to press events like E3 and PAX weren’t accurate demonstrations of the final product.

I know what a lot of people are thinking after playing the game, they should be sued! You would believe to be playing a game a decade old because Aliens: Colonial Marines was a terrible game. Was it the worst? No, it wasn’t, but it certainly was a runner up in that category. Terrible graphics, voice acting, and gameplay mechanics are just the tip of the ice burg, but was the demo not showing this is the question. Remember, all demos at these events are played on high-end computers showing the best possible quality, but consoles would be “dumbed” down per say.

As you can see from the demo above it’s somewhat descent. I wouldn’t call it game of the year or anything like that, but it looks playable at least. However, we should remember that the demo is never a final product even though Randy Pitchford said it just needed a few “tweaks.” Hell, most will tell you this at the start of the game that there can be changes made later in the final product. Where did everything go wrong between the nine months from the demo to the release date?

Kotkau did some underground work by talking to a few people from Gearbox and TimeGate who didn’t want their names released. Gearbox is not your everyday developer as they have overall made some good games like Borderlands, so Sega hired them to make Aliens: Colonial Marines. What could go wrong? Well, apparently Gearbox was too busy doing other projects like Borderlands 2 and threw what they had, which was seemingly nothing, at TimeGate. After the events Gearbox took it back over, and didn’t like anything about, so they pretty much decided to almost start over…nine months before release.

It would seem out of all three Gearbox really dropped the ball on this. Instead of living up to their deal of actually making it back when they first received permission years ago they just passed it off. When they decided to put the finishing touches on it they knew they were screwed. I’m sure they wanted to ask for more time, but after having over five years to make the damn thing I think it would have been a slap in the face for Sega.

By the end of this it is still hard to say one hundred percent who is actually at fault here. Everything is still really just speculations and whispers; since nobody wants to get fired for talking about what really happened. It would seem that communication was the real culprit in here because it wasn’t found. I’m still not sure on how I feel about the law suit though with the demo and the final product being different. If the game did well no one would have really cared, but since it flopped they want every dime they can get back, and it would be hard to imagine getting that from Sega.

What are your thoughts?
